So based on the above signs, following will be the tunes defined
Lower Octave |
'S 'R, 'R 'G, 'G 'M 'M^ 'P 'D, 'D 'N, 'N |
Middle Octave |
S R, R G, G M M^ P D, D N, N |
Upper Octave |
S' R,' R' G,' G' M' M^' P' D,' D' N,' N' |
There are 12 notes in an octave, and there are three different Categories of the Ragas based on the total number of notes known as Jati
Category |
Description |
Audav Jati | 5 notes - For example Raag Bhup |
Shadav Jati | 6 notes - For example Raag Brindabani Sarang |
Sampuran Jati | 7 notes - For example Raag Bhairavi |
Now if we take the Permutations and combinations and apply Combinations without Repetition formula to these above jati, following will be the total number of Ragas formed in particular Jati. The formula is:

where n = Total number of notes = 12 r = Total number of notes used .
Jati |
Total Number of Ragas |
Audav - 5 Notes | 12!/5!(7!) = 95040/120 = 792 |
Shadav - 6 Notes | 12!/(6!(6!) = 665280/720 = 924 |
Sampuram - 7 Notes | 12!/7!(5!) = 95040/120 = 792 |
Based on the above table and the formula, there will be total of 2508 Ragas based on different thaats. There are total 11 thaats so if we divide 2580/11 = 228 Ragas will be originated from each thaat - group of Ragas.
